In the 2003 hit comedy Bruce Almighty, Bruce Nolan (Jim Carrey) uses his godlike powers to sabotage rival news anchor Evan Baxter (Steve Carell) during a live telecast.
While the script called for Evan to stumble over his words, Jim Carrey and director Tom Shadyac decided to take it much further. Carrey stood directly behind the cameras making frantic hand gestures and inventing squeaks, noises, and gibberish on the fly, forcing Carell to match him in real time. Carell’s commitment to the bit launched him into stardom and led directly to his spin-off movie, Evan Almighty!
