India’s ornamental fish industry is poised for a more scientific, organised and globally competitive future with Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031, the Strategic Action Plan released by Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan in Agatti, Lakshadweep. The initiative focuses on standardised breeding and production practices, stronger quarantine, animal health, disease management and biosecurity measures, along with certification and traceability across the supply chain. It also aims to improve standards for handling, transportation and trade while developing skills and international certification. With Lakshadweep’s rich marine resources and potential for high-value fisheries activities, including ornamental fish farming, the mission could create new opportunities for India’s blue economy and help position the country as a globally competitive ornamental fisheries hub.
