The mythical North American animal this pub takes its name from is said to have the body of a jackrabbit and the antlers of an antelope. It’s thought the legends stemmed from a group of rabbits around Wyoming that had been infected with Shope papilloma virus, which causes horn-looking tumours to grow in various places on a rabbits body.
Whilst the legends have existed for centuries, they became more prominent in the Americas when taxidermists, the Herrick brothers, began grafting deer antlers onto carcasses and selling them into retail outlets in the 1930s.
The pub itself has been here since 1777, with the old ‘Dover Castle’ name etched into the windows. It was originally divided, with mirrors underneath the beam to allow coachmen to see when their passengers were ready to depart.
