We thought we knew what to expect from Boston, Massachusetts. We were wrong. (Oh boy, were we WRONG!)
As a British family travelling across America, Boston was always going to be one of the most fascinating stops on our road trip. This is a city where so much of American history is tangled up with our own — and this time, we got to experience that story from the other side of the Atlantic.
But our Massachusetts adventure actually started long before we reached Boston.
After leaving Upstate New York, we travelled through the mountains and small towns of western Massachusetts along the Mohawk Trail before eventually making our way into Boston and discovering a side of the state we hadn’t expected at all.
Once in the city, we stepped aboard the Boston Tea Party ships, threw some tea into Boston Harbor and learned more about the events that helped push Britain and the American colonies towards revolution. Experiencing that history as Brits was fascinating… and occasionally slightly awkward!
Then, of course, there was the food.
We tried New England clam chowder, a hot buttered lobster roll, Boston cream pie and cannoli with some VERY mixed reactions. David isn’t exactly known for his love of seafood, so Boston had its work cut out convincing him.
We finished our day sitting together in Boston Common, opening one final box of treats and looking back on everything we’d experienced. It was one of those days that reminded us why we wanted to make this journey in the first place: not simply to visit famous places, but to understand a little more about the history, food and people that make each part of America different.
