Whang-od has brought worldwide attention to the ancient Kalinga practice of baton, a traditional hand-tapped form of tattooing.
Born in the remote village of Buscalan, Whang-od is the last living Mambabatok at 109 years old, and a traditional Kalinga tattooist. Her traditional method includes hand-tapping rather than machine tattooing. She uses a thorn and a mixture of coal and water.
