One of the oldest documented taverns in Prague, it has been operating since 1499, when it served as both a brewery and malt house before the traditional dark beer was replaced by more popular Pilsner from elsewhere.
It gets its name from Jakub Flekovský, who was a maltster who acquired the property in 1762, and the sign includes a walking stick that became associated with his name in Czech slang.
By the 19th century it had become an important meeting place for key figures connected to the Czech National Revival, with writer Jan Neruda and composer Bedřich Smetana both documented as patrons, and Smetana said to have visited during the 1860s while working nearby.
