Opened in the late 1990’s to capitalise on the revival of absinthe culture which had been legal in Czech lands throughout the 20th century, in contract to France and Switzerland where bans were introduced in the early 1900’s.
Production was limited, and therefore largely absent from drinking culture following communist rule from 1948, until 1989 when Czech distillers began producing high-alcohol “Bohemian-style” absinthe, often without the traditional sugar-and-water preparation associated with 19th-century French practice
The bar’s interior deliberately references fin-de-siècle (end of the 19th century) decadence and surrealism, loosely evoking figures such as author Oscar Wilde and painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, though neither had any historical connection to Prague or the site itself.
