The best rated Chinese restaurant in NYC isn’t one of the fancier restaurants that have been opening across the city, which include high-end chains from China even. It is a simple noodle shop, loud and chaotic, cash only, and often requiring the sharing of tables. However, it tops the lists of best restaurants in NYC and is frequently regarded as the not just the most iconic Chinese restaurant in NYC, but among the best restaurants in the city period! I had to set out to find out why.

I’ve actually eaten at Great NY Noodletown many times. I remember being a fan of their char siu and their Hong Kong style roast duck, but I thought their noodles were only okay. Not bad, but not particularly better than the other wonton shops in the area. However, the restaurant is so hyped now and is no longer just a local gem, it is now drawing tourists and visitors from all over. So let’s see, is Great NY Noodletown worth its new hype?
