The original Greyfriars were a Franciscan order who established a friary here in the 15th century, as part of a wave of religious houses that gave the town its spiritual importance before the Reformation.
Their presence was short-lived, however, as Scotland’s break with Rome in the 16th century led to the friary’s dissolution and eventual ruin.
This pub is in the ground floor of the former Tudor Hotel with the current name likely coming from the Greyfriars Hotel further along the road following a refurbishment around 2000.
