Opened in 1911, it began selling Pilsner Urquell in 1926 and is one of the oldest in the city offering that lager.
Legend claims it was a popular spot for satirical novelist Jaroslav Hasek, who wrote The Good Soldier Svejk. The tale tells of a good-humoured, simple man who enthusiastically serves Austria-Hungary in WWI. It is the most translated Czech novel of all time, however it was originally intended to span six volumes and only three had been completed with Hasek died of a heart failure in 1923.
As well as hosting playwright and actor Jan Werich, singer Waldermar Matuska is said to have been a regular. A lively local bar, it is rumoured that writer Vladimir Skutina once insulted President Antonin Novotny here, leading to sixteen months in prison.
