Before Rush Hour, Jackie Chan met Chris Tucker at his agent’s office. Tucker talked so fast that Chan did not catch a single word. Tucker, meanwhile, decided Chan could not speak English at all.
On Academy Conversations, Chan remembers turning to his manager after Tucker left: “What the hell are you talking about? I don’t even one word coming from his mouth.” On Letterman in 1998, Tucker said Chan just smiled at him, and then, “after a while he started speaking and started doing flips and everything. I said, oh, now you speak English.” Chan: “And later on he used it in the movie.”
