With its name meaning ‘At the Black Ox,’ its one of the city’s oldest continuously operating pubs dating to around 1720’s when the lack of literacy meant that inns were identified by painted signs and symbols.
Although located in an area that is historically associated with craftsmen, clerics and servants from the nearby castles and aristocratic residences, it was primarily a beer hall for the working-class labourers involved in the construction and maintenance of the castle.
Between WWI and WWII, it began to attract writers and journalists, before it somehow survived the communist regime from 1948.
