Our journey begins on China’s ultra-quiet high-speed rail, traveling at 300 km/h to Guiyang. Once recorded in ancient imperial history as the remote “land of demons,” these vertical mountains have undergone a jaw-dropping transformation. Today, they serve as China’s national big data and AI capital, housing the naturally cooled, subterranean data centers for tech giants like Apple, Tencent, and Alibaba.
We venture deep into the mountains to meet the Miao people, a resilient culture with a 5,000-year history written directly into their stunning silver headdresses and intricate butterfly embroidery. We visit a “hollow village” altered by modern economics, decode the architectural genius of centuries-old water granaries built to defeat rats and fire, and share the absolute best home-cooked meal of our entire trip.
Finally, we head to Chengdu, where we get completely honest about our experience with the Wolong Panda Caregiver Program (spoiler: it lasted about 4 seconds), explore a highly unusual, plastic-wrapped Walmart, and examine what daily life and safety look like under the world’s most dense urban surveillance networks.
