Founded in 1795, it is widely regarded as America’s oldest continuously operating tavern after it was opened by Jimmy Wilson, who was the city’s last town crier – with the literal bell that he carried being the inspiration for the pubs name.
Whilst the current building is modern, it occupies the site of the original 18th century tavern in one of the oldest areas of the city.
It was rumoured to be a meeting point for early Boston leaders, but today’s drinkers are more likely to sense the ghost of the original founder who is said to haunt the bar.
