🏛️ ABOUT POSITANO
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The lower town of Positano sits atop a Roman villa buried by the same eruption of Mt. Vesuvius that destroyed Pompeii in 79 AD. Legend says the town’s name came from a stolen icon of the Madonna aboard a pirate ship caught in a storm — the painting cried out “Posa, posa!” (“lay me down!”), the ship glided safely to shore, and the town took its name from her words. The Black Madonna still hangs in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta beneath its majolica-tiled dome. A port of the Amalfi Republic, Positano fell on hard times in the 1800s, when over half its residents emigrated to America. It remained a quiet fishing village until John Steinbeck’s 1953 essay “Positano Bites Deep” made it one of the most famous towns in the world.
