Sometimes you don’t need a packed itinerary to have a great vacation. Sometimes, all you need is a beautiful beach, clear Caribbean water, a few hours to relax, and people you love.
On one of our trips to **Playa del Carmen, Mexico**, we spent some relaxing time at **Playa Mamitas**, right in front of what used to be the **Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen**.
The hotel is no longer a Hyatt—the former Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen left the World of Hyatt program on July 31, 2025. But the beautiful stretch of Caribbean beach in this area remains one of the reasons we have kept coming back to Playa del Carmen over the years.
### 🏝️ PLAYA MAMITAS
Playa Mamitas is one of the best-known beaches in Playa del Carmen. Located near Calle 28 and just a short walk from Quinta Avenida, it has that classic **Playa del Carmen beach vibe**—soft white sand, beautiful Caribbean water, palm trees, beach clubs, music, and plenty of people enjoying the day.
The sand was so white and inviting, while the water was a beautiful shade of blue and incredibly clear when we visited.
Standing on the beach and looking out toward the Caribbean, it was easy to understand why this part of Mexico keeps bringing us back.
### 🌊 A FEW HOURS BY THE BEACH
We didn’t need a long list of activities.
We simply spent time enjoying the beach, walking along the sand, watching the waves, looking out over the Caribbean, and soaking up the tropical atmosphere.
You can easily spend a couple of hours here swimming, relaxing, enjoying a drink or meal at one of the nearby beach clubs, taking photos, or simply sitting back and watching the world go by.
Playa Mamitas is known for being lively and social, so don’t expect a completely secluded beach. The area has beach clubs, music, loungers, and plenty of visitors. But that’s also part of its charm.
### 🇲🇽 WHY WE KEEP COMING BACK TO PLAYA DEL CARMEN
We’ve been to **Playa del Carmen several times over the years**, and there is something about this place that keeps pulling us back.
For us, Playa has a different feeling from Cancun.
Cancun is famous for its huge resorts, Hotel Zone, nightlife, and beautiful beaches. Playa del Carmen feels more connected to a walkable town, with **Quinta Avenida, local restaurants, shops, beach clubs, and the Caribbean all within a relatively compact area**.
We personally enjoy that combination. You can spend the morning at the beach, walk into town for lunch, explore Fifth Avenue, and come back to the water later in the day.
It feels like a place where you can enjoy both a vacation resort atmosphere and a little bit of everyday Mexican life.
### ☀️ OUR FAVORITE KIND OF VACATION MOMENT
Our time at Playa Mamitas wasn’t about doing something spectacular.
It was about slowing down.
The white sand beneath our feet.
The clear blue Caribbean water.
The warm sun.
The sound of the waves.
And simply enjoying another beautiful day in Playa del Carmen.
We’ve returned to this beach again and again because sometimes the places that become our favorites aren’t necessarily the places where we do the most.
They’re the places where we **feel the most relaxed and happiest**.
And Playa del Carmen continues to be one of those places for us.
