What do you do when your GPS stops helping, your map doesn’t show half the roads, and you’re trying to find Kangaroo Island’s famous beaches? You keep driving!
Join us for Day 3 on Kangaroo Island as we set out to explore some of the island’s beautiful coastline and Kangaroo Island beaches. What should have been a simple day of beach exploring quickly turned into an adventure of wrong turns, dirt roads and getting completely lost!
Our journey takes us to the Stokes Bay hidden beach, one of the most unusual hidden beaches on Kangaroo Island. At first, Stokes Bay looked like nothing more than a rocky shoreline, but after making our way through the large boulders, we discovered the beautiful sheltered beach hidden behind them.
We also visit Emu Bay, where we admire the long sandy beach and historic jetty from the car park. Although it was far too cold for swimming during our winter travel adventure, the views were beautiful.
Along the way, we unexpectedly discover George’s Castle, a fascinating local attraction filled with handmade walls, towers, recycled materials, whimsical sculptures and fantasy figures. We even climb the tower stairs to enjoy the views.
Still trying to find our way, we eventually reach Parndana, where we stop at a local bakery for a well-earned break. From there, we finally find our way towards Vivonne Bay, one of the most spectacular beaches on Kangaroo Island, with crystal-clear water, white sand and beautiful untouched coastal scenery.
Our adventure also includes a surprise koala sighting during a game of “I Spy,” a visit to Hanson Bay, where tannin-stained river water meets the turquoise waters of the Southern Ocean, and an unexpected stop at Kangaroo Island Spirits to learn about locally made gin and spirits.
As the afternoon comes to an end, we explore more of the coastline around Kingscote, taking in the peaceful scenery before finishing our day at the beautiful Bay of Shoals.
This day was a wonderful reminder that sometimes the best things to do on Kangaroo Island aren’t the places you planned to visit—they’re the unexpected discoveries you make along the way.
Come along for the drive as we explore the beaches, wildlife, hidden gems and spectacular coastal scenery of Kangaroo Island.
