Sardinia and Sicily both have real nude beaches, but they handle it in opposite ways. Sardinia has six officially recognised clothing-optional beaches, more than any other Italian region, spread across nearly 1,900 kilometres of coast, from the seven-kilometre dune-backed nude beach at Piscinas (named among National Geographic’s 20 most beautiful beaches in the world) to the calm, signposted bay at Baia delle Ninfe near Alghero. Sicily takes the opposite approach: almost none of its 1,500 kilometres of coastline is officially marked, and most of its nude beaches are wild stretches inside nature reserves that you find by walking until you spot other naked people.
If you want everything signposted and easy, Sardinia delivers, with clear nude-section markers at Feraxi and Spiaggia Monti Russu (one of Italy’s ten most beautiful beaches) plus quieter coves like Porto sa Ruxi and Cala di Volpe reached by short coastal trails. Sicily rewards more effort, with standout wild beaches inside the Vendicari and Torre Salsa reserves, at Capo Feto near Mazara del Vallo, and near Taormina, though a few spots like Bulala and Balestrate are worth skipping due to litter. Sardinia’s swimming season really starts in late May, while Sicily’s southern position keeps the water warmer through the shoulder seasons.
