Named after a type of traditional fishing boat, the Galway Hooker is a traditional Irish fishing boat common off the West Coast of Ireland.
Typically painted in pitch, its black appearance is striking with its dark red sails over a single mast with one mail sail. There are four classes of Irish Hooker boars, ranging from the smallest (The Leathbhád is about 28ft) to the largest (The Bád Mór is 44ft).
As Irish settlers moved to Boston, they built the hooker to cater to the fishing industry. As a result, these boats became known as ‘Boston Hookers’, ‘Irish Cutters’ or ‘Paddy Boats’.
