#China #Russia #Japan
I traveled across Manchuria—today’s Northeast China—following an old railway through abandoned bunkers, forgotten stations, battlefields, imperial cities and eight mysterious Japanese hotels.
What began as a railway became a struggle between China, Russia and Japan, culminating in war, occupation and the creation of Manchukuo. The empire disappeared. But its physical skeleton never completely did.
This series follows what remains—and the extraordinary story of how it got here.
