Built in 1976, this is rumoured to be the oldest pub in the city. It was built on the site of an old Quaker cemetery, which has resulted in the cellar being located on the first floor above the bar.
Staff have often noticed ghostly goings on, with the legend of at least two spirits – the first a hooded figure of unknown origin, and second an 18th century Spanish sailor who was stabbed in the pub for not accepting a Kings Shilling.
For much of its history, this pub did not admit women. The fairer sex were not allowed in the bar until 1977, making it one of the last men-only pubs to open to women.
Legend claims that Adolf Hitler was a frequent customer before the outbreak of WWII , during visits to his sister who was studying in the city.
