Although often spelt many ways, the story of this 7th century Saint was first recorded in 13th century by a French canon of the Chorus of Aubert.
She was 14 when her mother died and her father was pressed to remarry someone as beautiful as his first wife.
She fled her home, on learning of her fatherโs growing desire to marry her, given her resemblance to her deceased mother. After settling in Gheel, she built a hospice for the sick and mentally ill before being beheaded without reason some years later.
With her history of miraculous healings of the mentally ill, she was martyred by her father and is the patron for mental health professionals.
