New York’s Highline in Leeds?

In this video we meet two people who are campaigining to convert an abandoned railway viaduct – the Holbeck Viaduct – in south Leeds into Yorkshire’s answer to the New York Highline. The viaduct runs through one of the UK’s most active regeneration areas – the South Bank New Town. Over 7,000 new homes are proposed in this area, the British Library are reportedly moving in soon, and the city centre is rapidly expanding southwards.
Yet this abandoned viaduct sits as a pile of bricks through the middle of it all. Now plans are gathering pace to convert it into an elevated park, connecting Leeds City Centre and station to Leeds United’s football ground at Elland Road. Stairways and lifts are planned at different points along the route to create one of the UK’s most unique urban walking routes.
