Six Directions Exercise — The Gut Fitness Habit

Part 2 of 52 WEEKS of GUT HEALTH focuses on the TCM understanding of the gut, and introduces the Six Directions Exercise, also known as the Gut Fitness Habit.

The exercise uses the inner core muscles as if turning a small ball at our centre of gravity. By gently rotating this imaginary ball from side to side, we develop awareness and strength deep within the centre of the body.

In the TCM understanding explored in 52 Weeks of Gut Health, the gut is closely connected with our emotional experience. We don’t usually say, “I think good” — we say, “I feel good.” Our feelings are deeply connected with what is happening within the body.

The Six Directions Exercise is also valuable for posture, core strength and the connection between the hips and spine through the psoas muscles. It can help us reconnect with muscles that modern life no longer requires us to use as much as previous generations did.

The exercise is also about empowerment. The centre of the body has long been associated with strength and personal power. By consciously engaging these deep muscles, we can develop a greater sense of stability, strength and connection with our own centre.

Imagine a small ball at the core. How would we turn it?

Half a turn one way, then half a turn the other way.

This video also introduces the next two simple hand movements, opening and closing with the movement of the core.

An integral part of Tai Chi, as taught by Master Luke Chan.
