Crete attracts millions each year, and it’s not only because of its size or weather. The beaches here cover a wide range of landscapes—some require effort to reach, while others sit just below coastal roads.
📍 Agiofarago, for example, lies behind a gorge and takes a 45-minute hike to access. Glyka Nera means “sweet water” and gets its name from springs bubbling up beneath the beach. Voulolimni isn’t a traditional beach but a natural sea pool on Crete’s far west, often empty and still.
📍 Elafonisi and Balos are two of the most photographed spots, with shallow waters and long stretches of sand, but both still feel different depending on when you go. Falassarna is wide, open, and known for strong waves—good for windsurfers, less so for kids.
📍 Preveli offers a rare mix of river and sea, surrounded by cliffs and palm trees. Seitan Limania sits between steep rocks and feels cut off, despite its growing popularity. Kommos combines sand, sea, and ancient ruins from a Minoan port. Matala has a connection to mythology—according to the stories, this is where Zeus landed disguised as a bull.
📍 Vaï is lined with palm trees and often compared to a Caribbean setting, while Frangokástello has a 14th-century Venetian castle just meters from the sand. Kouremenos is long and quiet, ideal for water sports, and Istro keeps things simple—just water, sand, and quiet. Even the more developed beaches maintain a slower rhythm than those in busier parts of Europe.
At Elissos, we don’t rush from place to place. Our experiences allow space for you to explore these coastlines at your own pace, often including small, lesser-known paths and time to stop without schedule pressure.
