When Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted to star in the comedy Twins, many studio executives doubted audiences would accept him in a comedic role.
Instead of taking his usual upfront salary, Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito, and director Ivan Reitman agreed to waive their salaries in exchange for a share of the film’s profits.
The gamble paid off. Twins became a major box office success, grossing about $216 million worldwide. Schwarzenegger has said the profit-sharing deal earned him more than $40 million, making it one of the most lucrative deals of his acting career.
The success of Twins also helped prove Arnold could thrive in comedy, opening the door to later hits like Kindergarten Cop and Junior.
