For 11 days, the streets of Little Italy come alive with Italian food, colorful lights, carnival rides, street vendors, restaurants, music, and huge crowds celebrating one of New York City’s best-known Italian-American traditions.
What is the Feast of San Gennaro?
The tradition began in New York in 1926, when Neapolitan immigrants living around Mulberry Street held a one-day street celebration honoring San Gennaro (Saint Januarius), the patron saint of Naples. Over the decades, that small neighborhood celebration grew into an 11-day Little Italy tradition. 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of the New York feast.
San Gennaro was Bishop of Benevento and was martyred in 305 AD. He remains deeply associated with Naples and its religious traditions.
In this walking tour, we explore the festival atmosphere up close — packed streets, Italian restaurants, cannoli and pasta, sausage and peppers, carnival games and rides, colorful decorations, and the unmistakable energy of Little Italy during San Gennaro.
