Eleven nights, ten ports, and roughly one tasting menu per waking hour — this is our voyage from New York to Montreal aboard the brand-new Oceania Allura.

We set off from Manhattan (on foot, as it turned out, thanks to one of the largest protests the city has ever seen conspiring against every taxi in a mile radius), sailed past Lady Liberty at sunset, and spent the next week and a half working our way up the New England and Canadian coast. Along the way we watched a waterfall run backwards, met a city older than Canada itself, stood atop a falls taller than Niagara, squinted hopefully at beluga whales, and ate a poutine we’d been dreaming about for years. And when the weather turned — which, this being the North Atlantic in October, it occasionally did — we simply retreated to the ship, which turns out to be a rather magnificent place to be stuck.
Launched in 2025 and carrying just 1,200 guests, the Allura bills herself around Oceania’s “finest cuisine at sea,” and reader, we did our level best to stress-test that claim across every specialty restaurant on board. For science.

If you enjoy your travel with a side of dry commentary and questionable pacing decisions, do consider subscribing — there’s plenty more voyage where this came from.
