What happens when a controversial Hollywood movie angers North Korea?

In 2014, Sony Pictures released *The Interview*, a comedy film centered around North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The movie sparked a major controversy after North Korea strongly objected to its release.

Soon after, Sony Pictures Entertainment was hit by a devastating cyberattack claimed by a group calling itself the “Guardians of Peace.” Thousands of computers were disrupted, while huge amounts of confidential company and employee data were stolen and leaked.

The FBI later said it had high confidence that the North Korean government was responsible for the attack.

Despite the cyberattack and threats surrounding the movie, Sony Pictures released *The Interview* digitally on December 24, 2014.

This is the incredible story behind the Sony Pictures hack, The Interview, Guardians of Peace, and one of Hollywood’s most famous cyberattacks.
