Come along with me for a day in Hawaii as I explore three military beach destinations on Oahu — from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam to the beautiful west coast of the island.
I’m staying on the Hickam side of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, and today I’m taking you along as I pick up the rental car and head out to see some places I’ve wanted to check out for myself.

We start at the beach at Hickam, a convenient option if you’re staying on or visiting Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.
From there, we head to Navy Getaways Barbers Point Beach Cottages, where I take a look at the beach, surf conditions, cottage area and facilities and consider whether this might be a good place for a future family trip.
Then it’s up Oahu’s leeward coast to Pililaau Army Recreation Center (PARC) at Pokai Bay — and this one really caught my attention. We check out the beach, the calmer swimming area, the surf side and the beachfront cottages. I even get an opportunity to step inside one of the three-bedroom cottages for a quick look.
After a full day exploring Oahu, I wrap things up with dinner at Bibas Courtyard Grill at the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki.
For military retirees, active-duty service members, military families and Space-A travelers, Hawaii offers some terrific military recreation opportunities that can easily be overlooked.
Sometimes the best way to figure out whether a destination belongs on your future travel list is simply to go see it for yourself — so that’s exactly what we’re doing.
