When you first arrive in Rota, it looks like a typical Andalucian coastal town: beautiful sandy beaches, whitewashed buildings, historic streets, traditional Spanish architecture and a relaxed atmosphere. But there is something very different about Rota that you don’t find in most towns in Spain — its extraordinary connection with the United States of America.
For more than seven decades, Naval Station Rota has been part of life in the town, and it remains one of the most important US military installations in Spain. The American presence has become part of the fabric of the town, with Spanish and American communities living alongside each other for generations.
In this video, we explore Rota to find out what this unique relationship has actually meant for the town. We walk through the historic centre of Rota, explore its streets and squares, visit the impressive Castillo de la Luna and step inside the beautiful Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la O. We also spend time on Rota’s beaches and along the coast to experience the atmosphere and see why this part of Cadiz is so popular with people looking for a quieter side of southern Spain.
But the biggest question for us was whether Rota still feels like a traditional Andalucian town despite having such a strong American connection.

We wanted to experience Rota for ourselves rather than simply focus on the history of the base, so this video is also about the everyday atmosphere of the town — the people, the streets, the beaches, the architecture, the food, the history and the unique mix of Spanish and American influences.
Rota is also an interesting destination for travellers exploring the Costa de la Luz. While places such as Malaga, Marbella, Seville, Cadiz and the Costa del Sol are popular with international visitors, Rota offers a very different experience of coastal Andalucia.
The town is located in Cadiz province on the Atlantic coast, between Cadiz and the area around Jerez de la Frontera, and is within easy reach of Sevilla. Its location makes it an interesting stop for anyone exploring southern Spain, Andalucia and the Costa de la Luz.
And of course, the beaches are a major part of Rota’s appeal. With long stretches of golden sand and the Atlantic Ocean on its doorstep, Rota combines the history and character of an old Spanish town with the relaxed feel of a traditional beach destination.
