Denver’s food scene just picked up some major national recognition. The New York Times named two Denver restaurants to its list of 41 of the greatest Mexican restaurants across the United States.
First is La Diabla Pozole y Mezcal on Larimer Street, where Chef José Avila has built a restaurant around the pozole and flavors he grew up with in Mexico City. The Times specifically highlighted La Diabla’s pozole negro, along with its selection of guisados.
The second is Alma Fonda Fina in LoHi, from Chef Johnny Curiel and his wife, Kasie. The restaurant opened in late 2023 and earned a Michelin star in 2024, less than a year after opening.
Two completely different approaches to Mexican cuisine, both representing Denver on a national stage.
