The Manhattan bakery Sunday Morning has been named a 2026 Savor Honoree for Excellence in Cinnamon Roll.
Here is the origin story behind their viral cinnamon rolls:
Sunday Morning chef & owner Armando Litiatco trained at the California Culinary Academy, cooked at Restaurant Daniel, and was catering on the side while working at Google.
But the cinnamon roll was always his favorite pastry, and he could never find a truly great American-style one in New York. So on Sundays, the one day a restaurant person almost never gets off, he started baking his own at home just to satisfy the craving. Being a chef, he didn’t make small batches, so he shared them with friends and neighbors, the response kept growing, and he realized he might have something.
That home ritual became Sunday Morning, the bakery he opened with his partner Ahmet Kiranbay, named for those early mornings spent rolling dough on his one day off.
Today, those rolls draw lines down the block and rotating flavors that sell out by early afternoon. Johnny Norton of Culture Espresso, whose chocolate chip cookies have been honored as the best in NYC, calls Sunday Morning his favorite cinnamon roll in the city.
