This 3 hour drive starts in PCH Pacific Coast Highway and coastal Route 101 through Orange County and northern San Diego County on a clear day, with pure road ambience, no music and no talking.
The drive begins in Huntington Beach, Surf City USA, passing the pier and miles of wide sand before crossing into the harbors and beachfront homes of Newport Beach. From there the road winds into Laguna Beach, where the highway hugs the cliffs above coves and marine reserves, some of the most beautiful shoreline in California. Past Aliso Beach the route reaches Dana Point and its harbor, then follows the coast past Salt Creek and Doheny State Beach into the Spanish-village streets of San Clemente.
South of San Clemente the drive runs the wild, undeveloped stretch past San Onofre State Beach and through Camp Pendleton, one of the last open coastlines in Southern California, before returning to the beach towns of San Diego County: Oceanside and its pier, the flower fields and lagoons of Carlsbad, the surf town of Encinitas and Moonlight Beach, and Solana Beach. The drive ends at Del Mar beside the fairgrounds and the bluffs of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve.
