━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Copacabana is a neighborhood of roughly 350,000 people packed into a narrow strip between the Atlantic and the mountains of Rio de Janeiro. The beach stretches 4.5 kilometers along Avenida Atlântica, and the promenade’s wave-patterned mosaic is considered one of Roberto Burle Marx’s most significant works — he was a student of architect Lucio Costa and contemporary of Oscar Niemeyer, and is credited as a founder of Brazilian landscape modernism. The original Portuguese-style paving was laid in the early 1900s; Burle Marx reimagined it at full scale in 1970. Copacabana hosts the city’s famous New Year’s Eve celebration, Réveillon, which draws millions of people dressed in white to the beach each year.
