📍Anderson, South Carolina 🇺🇸
We had no real plan for Anderson, South Carolina. We saw a farmers market on the side of the road, pulled over for a coffee, and somehow barely made it two miles for the rest of the day. That’s the thing about small-town America. Sometimes the places nobody tells you to visit are the ones that give you the most reasons to stay.
We met an old South Carolina welder who spent his working life building American embassies across the former Soviet Union, a local man rebuilding his life at 69, family businesses making coffee and chocolate, and a country store where lunch is cooked behind the counter and eaten among the groceries. There were stories, hand-cut potatoes, farmhouse milk, perhaps the best hot dog of my life, and the kind of hospitality that can turn a place on a map into somewhere you’ll remember.
By evening we were sitting beside Lake Hartwell with fishing rods in the water, still incapable of catching anything. It didn’t really matter. We came to Anderson looking for nothing in particular and left having found exactly what keeps bringing us back to the American South. Good food, beautiful country and, above everything else, good people.
