Can GIFT City eventually become a financial centre for transactions that have little or no connection with India?
That could be one of the biggest tests of GIFT IFSC’s evolution into a truly global financial hub.
GIFT was initially built with the objective of bringing international financial services connected to India back onshore. But the longer-term opportunity is much bigger: attracting foreign investors, global fund managers, banks and financial institutions to use GIFT for international business itself.
Could a global investor raise money in GIFT and deploy it outside India? Could international fund managers use GIFT to manage global portfolios? And can the financial centre eventually facilitate global-to-global transactions rather than primarily India-linked business?
