Thinking about living in The Loop Chicago? This downtown Chicago walking tour shows what buyers actually get — and what The Loop homes for sale really cost.
I’m Samuel Ciochon, a broker with the Chicago Lifestyle Team at @properties — 16 years selling here, almost 20 living here. Today I walk the full Loop with my friend Stephen McGee, visiting from New York and new to Chicago.

WHY MOVE TO THE LOOP IN CHICAGO?
The Loop is Chicago’s central business district and oldest neighborhood, named for the elevated tracks circling the core; the ‘L’ loop was completed in 1897. Boundaries: Chicago River north, Lake Michigan east, Roosevelt Road south, the river’s South Branch west.
Here’s what most people relocating to Chicago get wrong. They assume downtown means the priciest housing in the city. It doesn’t. The Loop is one of the more affordable neighborhoods in Chicago to buy a condo — roughly $420,000 median at filming — because it’s majority commercial, with residential in pockets rather than on every block. That buys more space and better location than nearly anywhere else at the same number. My Four Pillars idea in action: price, size, location, finishes — pick two.
WHERE IS THE RESIDENTIAL IN THE LOOP?
Printers Row — the loft district south of Ida B. Wells Drive, named for the printing houses that filled it. Timber conversions, exposed brick, huge windows. The Transportation Building at 600 S Dearborn anchors it. Parking is tight; budget for it.
Lakeshore East — a residential pocket between Michigan Avenue and the lake with its own park. Jeanne Gang designed both the Aqua Tower and the St. Regis Chicago here. Mariano’s at 333 E Benton handles groceries, and the Pedway gets you into the Loop without going outside in winter.
WHAT’S CHANGING IN THE LOOP RIGHT NOW?
The LaSalle Street Reimagined initiative is turning vacant office towers into housing. As of January 2026, six projects worth over $900 million and 1,765 units are advancing with city support, plus fourteen more without it. Downtown-wide, roughly 26 conversions are underway, and Google takes over the Thompson Center at 100 W Randolph with about 2,000 employees.
Fair warning: those are apartments, not condos. They don’t add for-sale inventory. What they add is residents, foot traffic, and street-level retail.
WHAT’S THE HONEST DOWNSIDE?
The business district empties out after 7 p.m. That’s real, and I say so on camera. Most residents cross the river to River North for dinner. For crime data, use the Chicago Police Department’s public dashboard rather than anyone’s word for it, mine included.
WHERE DO YOU ACTUALLY GO?
The Dearborn (145 N Dearborn), open late near every theater. The Village at 71 W Monroe, Chicago’s oldest Italian restaurant. Printers Row Wine Bar and Café Deko on S Dearborn. Amarit Thai at 600 S Dearborn. Brando’s Speakeasy under the Fisher Building. On the Riverwalk: City Winery and Tiny Tapp & Café.
Millennium Park opened July 16, 2004 and holds Frank Gehry’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion — no dogs. Grant Park next door allows them, plus Buckingham Fountain and Lollapalooza. South of the river is the Cultural Mile: the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Cultural Center, the CSO, the Theatre District. The architecture is a daily amenity — the Rookery (Burnham & Root, 1888, with Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1905 light court), the Harold Washington Library Center, the Carbide & Carbon Building. Most are public. Walk in.
