Standing near the site of the old Flodden Wall which was hastily constructed as a defensive barrier during the Battle of Flodden in 1513.
The wall spanned what is now the lower section of the Royal Mile and, since stepping through the gates meant leaving the protection of the city, it was colloquially known as the edge of the world for residents.
When it was refurbished the money that had been pinned to the ceiling for years was gathered up and encased in the old bakery over carved into the wall.
Despite the friendly atmosphere it is sadly the location for one of Edinburgh’s darkest stories, as it was here, in 1977, that Christine Eadie and Helen Scott, were last seen alive leaving the pub.
