Named after the aristocratic granddaughter of the Lord Mayor of London, who is best known for her scandals romance with charismatic Irish Home Rule leader Charles Stewart Parnell.
Born in Essex, 22-year-old Katherine married Captain William H. O’Shea of the 18th Hussars, before the marriage deteriorated in 1875.
Her affair with Parnell started around 1880 and led to the birth of three children with her husband said to tolerate the developments for his own political or financial gain.
Throughout this time Kitty’s public profile raised, mainly through the expected wealth of her aunt, until it went elsewhere in 1889 leading to her husband filing for divorce with the subsequent split causing a scandal that devastated Parnell’s political career.
