The current building dates from 1902, but there has been some kind of hostelry on that site since about 1580.
Its name is believed to refer to the liquid leftovers from making cheese (Whey) and the pot in which something would be served (Pat). Stories claim that these pots would contain porridge or a thin gruel that was served to arriving pilgrims.
Hardly the nicest of welcomes, give me a beer any day!
