Dating back to 1713, the ‘Golden Tiger’s’ storied history includes hosting the city’s literary circles with the most famous visitor, Bohumil Hrabal, frequenting the pub from the 1950s until his death in 1997.
Often named as one of the best Czech writers off the 20th century Hrabal’s distinctive style contained the use of long sentences, with his works, such as the novel Dancing Lessons for the Advanced age (from 1964) and Vita Nuova (in 1987) consisting entirely of one, single sentence, which seems incredible because at 128 pages and 248 pages respectively is unlikely to be beaten in my attempts to stretch this paragraph out further.
One of the pub’s most widely documented historical moments occurred on 11th January 1994, when Czech President Václav Havel hosted U.S. President Bill Clinton here during an official state visit.
The informality and symbolism of the meeting, presenting the Czech Republic as a post-communist state grounded in everyday civic culture rather than ceremony, as Clinton reportedly drank Czech beer at the bar.
