One of the oldest taverns in the world, its believed to date back to the 15th century and the name means ‘At the Tomcat’.
During the 18th century, it functioned as a neighbourhood tavern rather than an inn, with no recorded guest rooms.
Because of this distinction, it navigated periods of tightening imperial regulations, particularly under Empress Maria Theresa’s alcohol reforms in the 1750s.
In the 19th century, the tavern reportedly hosted informal meetings of Czech-speaking artisans during the National Revival, although specific participants are not reliably documented.
