Modelled on the Bavarian beer hall culture, its name comes from the Munich festival rather than any local association.
Usually held between mid-September to the first Sunday in October it is the world’s largest folk and beer festival, and it originated from the wedding celebration for Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen.
