New York’s oldest bar, it was originally built by the DeLancey family as a private residence, before later transforming into a tavern by Samuel Fraunces in 1762 – it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Legend has it, that it once served as the watering hole for many of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America.
Although operating as a busy bar, restaurant and whiskey room the upper floors are largely dedicated to the museum which comprises of nine galleries – including The Long Room where on December 4th 1783, nine days after the last British troops had left American soil, George Washington gathered a group of officers, to thank them for their service and bid an emotional farewell.
