🦈 Calvert Cliffs State Park in Maryland, USA, is one of North America’s most famous fossil-hunting destinations.
Stretching along the Chesapeake Bay, these towering cliffs expose sediments from the Calvert Formation, dating back roughly 18–15 million years to the Middle Miocene Epoch. During that time, this region was covered by a warm, shallow sea filled with incredible marine life.
Visitors can legally search the shoreline for fossils washed out by natural erosion. Among the most exciting discoveries are Megalodon shark teeth, along with fossils of ancient whales, dolphins, fish, seabirds, mollusks, and countless other prehistoric marine animals.
Because the cliffs are constantly eroding, fossil collecting is allowed only on the beach, while climbing the cliffs is prohibited for safety.
Today, Calvert Cliffs State Park remains one of the best places in the United States to discover authentic prehistoric fossils and explore a landscape that preserves millions of years of Earth’s history.
