Renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja has been confirmed dead after he went missing in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. The news was confirmed through a statement shared by Elite Exped on its official Instagram account.
Purja was leading a 10-member international climbing team when the avalanche struck on Thursday while the group was climbing from Camp II to Camp III. Contact with the team was lost after the incident.
Known worldwide as “Nims”, Purja earned global recognition for his record-breaking mountaineering achievements and leadership in high-altitude expeditions. His death is a major loss to Nepal’s mountaineering community.
