Literary fans may recognise this Tavern as featuring in the Charles Dickens novel, Our Mutual Friend, as the setting for a wedding breakfast. The novel, which was the last Dickens completed, features his usual large ensemble cast and themes of social inequality and wealth disparity.
The pub was built in 1837, opening just in time to see Queen Victoria ascend to the throne. It was built on the site of the Old George Inn. The owner, itโs said, wanted to rebrand and enlarge the premises to serve visitors to Greenwich, rather than the Fisherman who had frequented the Old George Inn. As part of this, the tavern became the venue for the ministerial “whitebait dinners,” where politicians dined on freshly caught whitebait from the Thames. The tradition became an annual event, with ministers traveling by barge from Westminster to attend.
It ran as such until 1915, after which it was used for a variety of purposes such as residential and as a working menโs club.
On a sunny day the pub is absolutely heaving with tourists and is one of my very favourite spots in London with its spectacular frontage, thousands of oddities, and knickknacks throughout and fantastic food.
