Movie Recap

The story begins in Afghanistan, where an unnamed Staff Sergeant arrives to assist his brother’s broken-down convoy. During their conversation, his brother encourages him to apply for the Army Rangers. However, their discussion is suddenly interrupted when Taliban insurgents ambush the convoy.

Everyone in the convoy is killed except the Staff Sergeant, who suffers a severe knee injury. Despite his condition, he attempts to carry his mortally wounded brother back to base but collapses before reaching safety. When he later wakes up in a hospital, he learns that his brother has already died. For his actions, he is awarded the Silver Star, though the recognition only deepens his emotional burden.

Two years later, the Staff Sergeant attends RASP (Ranger Assessment and Selection Program) in order to join the 75th Ranger Regiment. He is assigned the candidate number 81.

Candidate 81 performs exceptionally well during training but struggles to connect with the other recruits. Despite his strong performance, he refuses the role of team leader. During an underwater endurance exercise, he nearly allows himself to drown, raising concerns among the regiment’s leaders, Sergeant Major Sheridan and First Sergeant Torres, who question his mental condition due to possible PTSD.

They recommend that he temporarily withdraw from the program to recover, but Candidate 81 refuses. Instead, they allow him to continue and assign him as the team leader for the final exercise: a simulated mission in the forest to destroy a classified aircraft and rescue its pilot.

Around the same time, reports emerge about a suspected asteroid passing near Earth, which appears to break apart into several fragments.

During the exercise, the team is suddenly struck by a mysterious blast from the sky that disables their communications equipment. While investigating the area near a creek, they discover a strange object that they initially believe to be the classified aircraft from their mission.

However, after planting explosives on it, the object remains undamaged and suddenly transforms into a walking machine that begins hunting and killing the recruits. Because they are only carrying blank training rounds, they are unable to fight back effectively.

Candidate 7, the team’s second-in-command, suffers a severely broken leg and must be carried by the others. After the attack, only 81, 7, 15, 44, 60, 109, 122, and 23 remain alive.

The machine also disrupts the magnetism of their compasses, allowing them to detect when it is nearby.

After escaping downriver, they reach what they believe to be the opposing force from their training exercise, only to discover that those soldiers have already been eliminated by the machine.

Emotionally shaken, Candidate 15 confronts 81 about his cold behavior toward the team. In response, 81 reveals the truth about his brother’s death. He explains that he collapsed just 100 yards from base, and his brother died because he couldn’t carry him any farther. Despite that tragedy, he was awarded a medal for what he considers the worst day of his life.

After observing a trail of impact stretching from a distant mountaintop to the valley below, the team concludes that the machine is extraterrestrial in origin. They attempt to return to base using an ASV vehicle, but the machine continues pursuing them.

Although they later find live ammunition, they discover that the machine’s armor is nearly impossible to penetrate. Candidate 81 eventually slows the machine down by triggering a rockslide, but their vehicle is destroyed during the escape. Only 81 and 7 survive the encounter.
