Derek Prue Sr. noticed his eight-year-old son quietly retreating from view. Derek Jr. had a large birthmark stretching across his left chest and torso, and by 2020 he’d begun keeping his shirt on at the pool, anxious about how others might react. “He was always proud of his birthmark, and then I saw he started to kind of cover it up,” his father told CBC News. “I saw how he was reacting, and it made me want to do it so that he wouldn’t be the only one.”
His solution was to wear the same mark himself. Quietly, Derek Sr. took reference photos to tattoo artist Tony Gibert at the Juicy Quill studio in Stony Plain, Alberta, photos his wife, Shanel, had snapped of their son’s birthmark after telling the boy they were for the doctor. Gibert then stippled a precise replica across Derek Sr.’s chest and ribs, among the most painful areas on the body to tattoo. He’d guessed it might take a single day. It took more than 30 hours across several sessions over weeks. “He’s been through the wringer sitting for that,” Gibert said.
The boy had no idea. On a family trip to a hotel pool, Derek Sr. simply lifted his shirt and let his son see the matching mark for the first time. Derek Jr. spent the rest of that day swimming without his. As he later put it to his mother, “Whenever Daddy’s there, I can take the shirt off
